Love: Sword Fern

There are some gardens that are basically TOXIC when it comes to maintenance. Or there are some gardens that are located far enough away that they will not get maintained the way they should, then they become a nightmare, due to neglect. A pretty great solution for those types of gardens that also happen to be somewhat shady is mass with ferns and shrubs. In the winter they are evergreen, and in the spring, they are simply mowed down so the new fiddleheads can emerge. And if the shrubs are between 4-10′ tall, it is a good fit. Mature ferns get up to 5’ across and only 2’ tall and they seem to really do a good job of snuffing out the competition. A more attractive alternative to bark, these ferns are native and evergreen, so they look good year round.
